Before & after

Show up ready. Heal it right.

Glass of water with lime

Hydrate

Drink lots of water for 24 hours before. Skip alcohol and other blood thinners for 24 hours to limit bleeding.

Comfortable oversized clothes

Dress for access

Wear something comfy that exposes the spot: shorts for a thigh, short sleeves for a shoulder, a zip-up for your back. Avoid white or light colors.

Fresh strawberries

Eat first

Eat at least an hour before so you don't get lightheaded. Long session? Bring snacks and a drink.

Skin care drops

Skin prep

Moisturize for a week if your skin is dry, and avoid sunburn on the area. Don't shave it; your artist will.

Bring a government-issued photo ID to every appointment.

Day 1

  • Remove the bandage or wrap after a few hours. Ask your artist exactly how long; it varies by tattoo.
  • We also offer DermShield, which stays on 3 to 5 days, then is removed and followed with unscented antibacterial soap and unscented lotion.
  • Some oozing (plasma, a little blood and ink), redness and soreness is normal.
  • With clean hands, wash with warm water and an antibacterial, fragrance-free soap. Use a fragrance-free healing ointment for the first 3 to 5 days (skip if you have DermShield), then switch to an alcohol-free moisturizer.

Days 2 – 3

  • The tattoo looks duller and cloudier as it heals. Scabs start to form.
  • Wash 2 to 3 times a day and keep up the ointment, then switch to fragrance-free moisturizer.
  • A little ink in the sink is just excess ink.

Days 4 – 6

  • Redness starts to fade and light scabbing appears.
  • Don't pick the scabs; it can scar.
  • Keep washing once or twice a day and moisturizing.

Days 7 – 14

  • Scabs harden and flake off on their own. Let them.
  • It may itch a lot. Gently apply fragrance-free moisturizer several times a day.
  • Still red and swollen? You may have an infection. Come back to your artist or see a doctor.

Days 15 – 30

  • Most big flakes are gone. The area may still look dry and dull, so keep moisturizing.
  • The outer layers heal in 2 to 3 weeks. Lower layers can take 3 to 4 months.
  • By the end of month three it should look as bright and vivid as your artist intended.

Do

  • Cover it with clothing and keep it out of the sun.
  • Avoid excessively tight clothing.
  • Keep it clean and free of dirt, sweat and pet hair.

Don't

  • Keep it in the sun for long periods.
  • Soak it: no pools, lakes, ocean, baths or hot tubs.
  • Use anything with fragrance.
  • Pick at scabs or peeling.

Long term

  • Keep your skin moisturized and your tattoo out of the sun.
  • Need a touch-up? Let your artist know. Each artist has their own touch-up policy.

FAQ

Good questions. Straight answers.

What form of ID do I need to bring?
A government-issued photo ID that shows your age and birthdate: a state driver's license, passport or military ID. We verify and document it when you arrive and make a copy.
Do I need an appointment?
Appointments are encouraged but not necessary. Please call the shop first to make sure we're taking walk-ins: (210) 577-6279.
How old do I have to be?
In Texas you must be 18 or older. There are only two exceptions:
  • An emancipated minor who brings documentation of emancipation (we will photocopy it).
  • A court-ordered cover-up for a minor (for example gang-related, drug-related or obscene imagery, or a court-mandated cover-up in the minor's best interest). A parent must be present for the entire tattoo and may not leave the studio.
Tattooing a minor is a class C misdemeanor in Texas. See Texas Administrative Code, §229.406(d).
Can I get tattooed while pregnant?
No. We don't tattoo during pregnancy and recommend waiting until you're done breastfeeding. Pregnancy changes your immune system, blood volume and healing, which raises the risk of infection, allergic reaction and complications, and numbing agents haven't been well studied in pregnancy.
What's the shop minimum?
The shop minimum is $80. Consultations are free.
Can I bring a friend?
As a blanket rule, one guest per client so your artist has room to work. Some artists have their own guest policy, so check with your artist first.
Can I be under the influence?
No. It makes the session unpleasant for you and your artist, and we will refuse service if we believe you're under the influence.
Do you do piercings?
We are not currently offering piercings. We're all about the ink right now. Meet the artists.
How do I take care of my new tattoo?
Follow the aftercare timeline above and your artist's instructions. We also carry tattoo care products in the studio, including DermShield.
